Ceramic shaping (generic)

Overview

There are several ceramic forming processes, although most of them are specific to individual materials such as throwing for pottery, casting for concrete and slip casting for porcelain.

Because ceramics only melt at very high temperatures, most forming of “engineering ceramics” (like alumina) is based on using dry powder or "bound" powder which can be moulded; at the dominant method of forming engineering ceramics is sintering. An exception to this general rule is glass forming, since glass softens sufficiently for it to be moulded.
